How to Cold DM on X (Twitter)
A cold DM is a first message to someone who has not talked to you before, sent to start a real conversation, not to pitch in line one. Who you message matters more than what you write. Messaging people who engaged with a relevant post, or sending from an account with a real following, earns about 4x the average reply rate (Xreacher customer data, 2.1M X DM threads from 360 users, March to September 2026; correlational). Keep the opener short, specific, and end it with one easy question. Then pace sends inside X's daily DM caps and track reply rate, not sends.

What 43.7M real cold DMs say
Figures below come from the Xreacher Cold DM Benchmarks (H2 2026), computed across every X/Twitter campaign sent through Xreacher in the 180 days ending July 3, 2026, aggregated, anonymized, with the methodology published on that page.
2.2-2.5%
Solo and small senders (1-3 accounts)
Senders using 1-3 X accounts saw 2.2-2.5% reply rates, roughly 6x the 0.39% earned by mass multi-account operations. Targeting beats volume.
See the data42%
Replies arriving within 24 hours
42% of replies to a single-message cold DM arrive within 24 hours, 62% within three days, and 22.6% only after a full week, long after most senders stop watching the thread.
See the data~4x
Reply-rate lift from following before DMing
Within campaigns using follow-before-DM, followed leads replied at ~4x the rate of leads who were only DMed (1.42% vs 0.35%). Correlational, scoped within-campaign.
See the data99.3%
Cold DM threads that never get a follow-up
99.3% of cold DM threads are a single message; even among smaller non-bulk senders, 96.5% never send a follow-up, partly rational, since follow-ups consume the same daily DM allowance as fresh prospects.

What a cold DM is (and isn't)
A cold DM is a direct message to someone who has not talked to you before and did not ask to hear from you. That makes it different from a warm reply or a customer support thread: you have one shot to earn a reply before the person decides you're spam. The message that works reads like a person noticed something specific, not like a script. It is short, it names a real detail about the recipient or their post, and it asks one easy question instead of pitching a product in the first line.
- A cold DM starts a conversation; it does not close a sale
- It references something true and specific about the recipient
- It ends with one low-effort question, not a link or a pitch
Who you DM matters more than what you write
Xreacher customer data shows lead source is the single biggest lever on reply rate, bigger than the opener itself. People who liked, commented on, or reposted a relevant post reply at about 4x the average (Xreacher customer data, 2.1M X DM threads from 360 users, March to September 2026; correlational). Sending from an account with a real following (2k or more) also runs about 4.4x average, because the recipient can see you're a real person before they open the thread. The most common way people cold DM, messaging followers of some other account, is the weakest source and runs below average. Pick your source before you write a single word.
- Best: people who engaged with a relevant post (likes, comments, reposts)
- Also strong: sending from an account with an established following
- Weakest, most common: cold followers of someone else's account
- A curated CSV list you've vetted yourself beats a raw scrape
How to write the opener
Cut the opener to one or two sentences. Name something specific about the person, their bio, their last post, or the group you both share, then ask one small question they can answer in five words. Do not explain your product, do not use a headline, and do not attach a link. The only job of message one is to get a reply. Save the pitch for message three or four, after the person has actually responded and shown interest. If you can't point to a specific detail worth mentioning, that's usually a sign the lead source is too broad, and the opener won't save it.
- "Saw your post on [specific topic], curious how you're handling [specific detail] right now?"
- "Your bio mentions [specific detail], are you still doing that, or did you move on from it?"
- "Noticed you replied to [account] about [topic], what's your take on it?"
Follow-ups: when and how many
Most cold DMs never get a follow-up at all: in the Xreacher Twitter Cold DM Benchmarks, 99.3% of threads are a single message, and even smaller senders skip a second touch on 96.5% of them. That's partly rational, a follow-up spends the same daily send as a new lead, but it still means most senders leave replies on the table. Space a follow-up a few days after the first message, keep it under a sentence, and change the angle instead of repeating the same question. Two follow-ups is usually enough; a third starts to read as pressure.
- Wait 2-4 days before the first follow-up
- Ask a different question, don't repeat the opener
- Stop after two follow-ups if there's no response
Timing, pacing, and X's DM caps
X caps how many cold DMs an account can send per day: about 7 for free accounts, 35 for Premium, 75 for Premium+, as of July 2026. Treat that cap as a ceiling, not a target. Spread sends across the day instead of firing them all at once, and reserve part of the daily allowance for follow-ups rather than spending it entirely on new leads. Since 42% of replies to a single message land within 24 hours and 62% within three days, give a thread a few days before you follow up or move on.
- Free accounts: about 7 DMs/day. Premium: about 35. Premium+: about 75
- Spread sends through the day instead of bursting all at once
- Hold back some daily sends for follow-ups, not just new leads
Measure reply rate, not sends
Sends are a vanity number. Reply rate tells you whether the source and the opener are actually working. Track it by lead source (engagers vs. followers vs. CSV) and by opener, so you can see which combination earns replies instead of guessing from a single blended average. A campaign that sends less but replies more is the one worth scaling, and you won't know which that is until you split the numbers apart. Xreacher handles the sourcing, opener variations, follow-up sequencing, and pacing inside X's daily caps automatically, and its analytics break reply rate down by opener and lead list so you can see what's working.
FAQs
What is a cold DM?
A cold DM is a first direct message to someone who has not talked to you before and did not opt in to hear from you. The goal of the first message is to start a reply, not to pitch. It works best when it references something specific and ends with one easy question.
How do I write a cold DM that gets replies?
Keep it to one or two sentences. Name a specific, true detail about the recipient, their bio, a recent post, or a shared interest, then ask one small question. Skip the pitch, the link, and the headline. Save your offer for later in the conversation, after they've replied.
Who should I cold DM on X?
Lead source matters more than the message itself. People who liked, commented on, or reposted a relevant post reply at roughly 4x the average, per Xreacher customer data from 2.1M DM threads. Sending from an account with a real following (2k or more) runs about 4.4x average. Cold followers of someone else's account are the weakest, most common source.
How many follow-ups should a cold DM get?
Two is usually enough. Space the first follow-up 2-4 days after the initial message, using a different angle instead of repeating yourself. A third follow-up starts to feel like pressure. Most senders skip follow-ups entirely, which leaves replies on the table for the ones who do send them.
How many cold DMs can I send per day on X?
X caps daily cold DMs by account tier: about 7 for free accounts, 35 for Premium, and 75 for Premium+, as of July 2026. Treat the cap as a ceiling. Spread sends through the day and hold back part of your allowance for follow-ups instead of spending it all on new leads.
How do I know if my cold DMs are working?
Track reply rate, not send count, and break it down by lead source and by opener. Xreacher's analytics show reply rate by campaign, opener, account, and lead list, so you can see which source and which message actually earn conversations instead of judging from one blended number.
